چکیده مقاله:

Background: Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is an autoimmune inflammation of the central nervous system in which autoantibodies are released against Aquaporin-4 (AQP-4), astrocytic water channels. The disease is characterized by transverse myelitis and optic neuritis. Viruses could be inflammatory agents in the brain. Due to such inflammatory reactions, autoantibodies would cross the blood brain barrier. Therefore, recognizing the responsible viral agent may help us prevent or treat NMO.  Objectives: To investigate the probable association between Cytomegalovirus Infection (CMV) and neuromyelitis optica. Materials & Methods: This descriptive study was performed on 25 patients with NMO, 30 patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) referring to an academic MS Clinic and 30 healthy individuals in Isfahan City, Iran in 2016. In order to detect DNA of CMV in the sera of the studied groups, real-time PCR technique was used with hydrolyzing probes such as TaqMan. Beacon Designer 7 was used to design a primer and probe. The Chi-square test was used for statistical analysis in SPSS 16. Results: Three study groups had no significant difference in terms of age (P=0.33) and gender (P=0.599). All of the samples were negative for CMV DNA. There was no significant difference between three groups of study [N1] (P=0.33). Conclusion: Regarding the negative real-time PCR results of all samples, and especially using higher specificity of primers and probes in detecting this virus, it can be inferred that no significant correlation exists between CMV infection and NMO disease.

Association between neuromyelitis optica and tuberculosis in a Chinese population

BACKGROUND A number of reports have described the presence of tuberculosis (TB) in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) patients. However, a definite association between the two conditions has not been conclusively demonstrated. METHODS To investigate the association between NMO and TB in a Chinese population, we performed a retrospective review of hospital records of NMO patients, control patients and...

Association Between Helicobacter Pylori Infection and Seronegative Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder

Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease in the central nervous system. Association between NMOSD and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has been investigated, but few studies have assessed the relationship between H. pylori and seronegative AQP4-Ab NMOSD. Objectives: This study aimed to survey the association between H. pylori...

Neuromyelitis Optica in Children: A Rare Entity

Neuromyelitis optica (also known as Devic's disease or Devic's syndrome) is an uncommon disorder in pediatric age group, and is characterized by acute or subacute optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. Here we report an 11- year- old female child with relapsing Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) confirmed by positive NMO- IgG antibody and had clinical recovery with high dose methyl prednisolone t...

Neuromyelitis optica preceded by hyperCKemia and a possible association with coxsackie virus group A10 infection.

We report the case of a 48-year-old woman presenting with an elevated serum creatine kinase level (hyperCKemia) associated with an initial attack of neuromyelitis optica (NMO). The patient initially showed general fatigue with fever. Laboratory findings showed hyperCKemia and subsequently she developed a slight weakness of both lower limbs and reduced vision. Autoantibodies against aquaporin 4 ...

Interferon Alpha Association with Neuromyelitis Optica

Interferon-alpha (IFN- α ) has immunoregulatory functions in autoimmune inflammatory diseases. The goal of this study was to determine occurrence and clinical consequences of IFN- α in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) patients. Thirty-six NMO and 41 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients from a population-based retrospective case series were included. Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score and MRI f...

Neuromyelitis Optica

An 11-year-old girl developed sudden visual loss in her left eye, preceding subacute myelitis by 9 months. Multifocal lesions in the central nervous system were demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging. Although unilateral blindness is unusual, the clinical findings predominantly involving the optic nerve and spinal cord were consistent with the diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica (NMO). This c...
